Erdogan continues to marginalise and criminalise opposition and Öcalans isolation continues. The experiment in direct democracy inspired by his writings is imperilled by the aggression of the Turkish state. This article is based on a speech delivered by Sinn Féin MP for South Down Chris Hazzard in the House of Lords on February 15th 2019 at an event marking the 20th anniversary of Öcalan’s abduction by the Turkish state.
The FreedomForÖcalan.org trade union campaign was joined by academics, politicians and leading civil rights lawyers for a special conference in the House of Lords on the 20th anniversary of Abdullah Öcalans capture. The meeting called on the Turkish government to honour its own legal framework and the internationally accepted “Mandela Rules” and end the isolation of Öcalan.

This years festivities at the annual Durham Miner's Gala saw a large influence by the Freedom for Ocalan Campaign. The march injected a fantastic sense of Kurdish spirit to the proceedings, and invigorating speeches from influential members of the movement inspired all in attendance.
UK Trade Union's have sent a letter to Turkish Ambassador, Sir Dominick Chilcott, to ask that he personally ensure that Abdullah Ocalan receives a birthday card from the TUC. The Sixty-nine year old political prisoner has been denied access to his family, lawyers, and medical advice during his incarceration on Imrali Island.Read more
